WHY AUTO SHOWS ARE HERE TO STAY

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – November 25, 2019 — Auto shows are a smorgasbord for potential buyers as well as car buffs.

This year’s 62nd San Francisco Chronicle International Auto Show, which runs Nov. 28 to Dec. 2, 2019 at Moscone Center, will introduce the public to the latest technological advances and designs being offered by the world’s major manufacturers and provide experts to answer questions in an informative, pressure free non-sales environment.

“If you want to explore the latest and greatest that the auto industry has to offer, then without a doubt your first stop should be a local auto show,” said Charlie Gilchrist, 2019 National Automotive Dealers chairman and a dealer.

“It’s where consumers can still touch and feel products across all segments and brands. It’s no coincidence that more than 11 million consumers are attending U.S. auto shows every year – with 68 percent of them planning a new-vehicle purchase within 12 months”.

Three out of four of the folks who go to car shows are there to shop for a vehicle, according to Steve Bruyn, Chief Executive Officer of Foresight Research.

“For the San Francisco show last year, 70 percent said they would buy a car or truck in the next year,” said Bruyn. “At the show, they get a full line of cars.

“They are there to shop and enjoy the environment, but often just come to see a car or truck in which they are particularly interested.”

Sometimes they just want to look.

“This is my first time attending an auto show and have never seen so many beautiful cars in my life!” said San Leandro resident Anna L., after her visit to the show.

“I love how they allow people to sit in most of the cars, except for the crazy expensive ones. They have a mixture of exotic cars, classic ones, and regular cars like Honda, Lexus etc.

“My favorite part is hopping onto a cop’s motorcycle and messing around inside a CHP car. The cop said he didn’t mind as long as I didn’t touch his computer.”

The San Francisco show features many of the 2020 models, but also showcases alternative fuel vehicles, exotic sports cars, elegant classic cars, a Car Club exhibit and modified street vehicles in the Auto Salon.

Another factor in favor of car shows is the absence of aggressive sale staff. Manufacturers are prohibited from making sales pitches at the show. They must rely on their displays to attract the public.

“It is really all about what the public wants to see and experience,” said Kevin Diamond, show director.

“Attendees are also attracted by the opportunity to talk to knowledgeable product specialists in a pressure free non-sales environment. They can also test drive several of the vehicles,” Diamond said.

Among the vehicles expected to be available for test drives are the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Dodge Durango SRT, Fiat 124 Spider, Ram 1500 Rebel, Jeep Cherokee, Gladiator and Wrangler and Toyota 2020 Corolla Hybrid, 2019 Camry, Prius and RAV 4.

“Show goers, who may be buying a car or a truck next week or next year, want to know what new models are available within their price range and preferred style,” said Diamond. “If they want to compare vehicles they are interested in, the car show is their best option.”

This year’s show will provide the general public with the opportunity to experience and view the newly remodeled Moscone Center with exhibits in the north and south halls, the new south hall expansion plus the north and south lobby and driveway areas.

In addition to the latest in automotive technology and innovation including many of the 2020-model vehicles, the show will have the largest selection of electric, hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles, exotic sports cars and special exhibits including the Academy of Art University Classic Car Collection and the San Francisco Auto Salon with modified and trend setting cars. The Show will also include exhibits from the Aston Martin and Ferrari Clubs of America, a display of privately owned Teslas and an auto accessory booth area.

A HISTORY OF THE SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – November 8, 2019 — In 1958, unable to participate in the local domestic auto show, forward-thinking Bay Area import auto dealers decided to create their own exposition. Given the novelty and interest at the time in foreign made cars, the auto dealers’ idea proved to be a good one. For nearly two decades the Import Car Show, the precursor to what is now the International Auto Show, flourished and expanded at Brooks Hall and the Civic Center.

The globalization of the auto industry in the ‘60’s and 70’s marked a new era of automotive production and demand. Therefore, the Import Car Show broadened its scope to include the products of both domestic and international manufacturers and was renamed the International Auto Show. In 1982, the show moved to its new home at the Moscone Convention Center in downtown San Francisco.

From the onset, the show was a tremendous success and recognized by auto manufacturers as an integral component to selling their vehicles. Display space was in high demand and, as such, required the auto show to expand its footprint.

Fortunately, in 1992, another hall was added to the Moscone Center. The additional space allowed exhibitors to construct more elaborate displays to showcase their vehicles and provided spectators a more spacious and inviting environment in which to view them. It also allowed the San Francisco International Auto Show to grow into what it has become today–the premier auto show in Northern California and the only one held regionally that lures the dazzling, high-tech displays from the world’s major manufacturers. It is the second largest auto show in the Western United States and the number one exhibition of any kind in Northern California.

Now celebrating its 62nd year, the International Auto Show, continues to grow. This year’s show, set for Nov. 28 – Dec. 2, will fill the newly remodeled Moscone Center with exhibits in the north and south halls, the new south hall expansion plus the north and south lobby and driveway areas.

The latest in automotive technology and innovation representing the work of the world’s major manufacturers will be on display at the show including many of the 2020-model vehicles, new product introductions, the largest selection of electric, hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles plus the newest driver assist and connectivity technology.

In addition, there will be exotic sports cars, manufacturer “Test Drives” and special exhibits including the Academy of Art University Classic Car Collection and the San Francisco Auto Salon with modified and trend setting cars. The Show will also include exhibits from the Aston Martin and Ferrari Clubs of America, a display of Teslas and an auto accessory booth area.

The San Francisco Chronicle 62nd Annual International Auto Show, the Bay Area’s largest and most prestigious auto exposition, is presented by Golden 1 Credit Union and supported by the California New Car Dealers Association. It promises to be the most spectacular show to date.

Show hours are:

Thursday, Nov. 28 – Sunday, Dec. 2 : 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m
Monday, Dec. 2: 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
